Looking for a cozy little space in Kyoto to snuggle into? Relax here, in Japanese style with western comforts. That's what Kampong House offers and more.
'Kampong' is a sentimental Malay word we transplanted onto this abode. We thought it perfect for this little enclave which reflects the 'Kampong' or serene Kyoto village atmosphere.
Something you can't get from a hotel room. This is a "live it" and "feel it" accomodation. Best of all, you are a stroll away from the famous Kamo river.
Being in a quiet, peaceful location doesn't mean isolation. Actually, you are only 5 minutes taxi ride from the central Kyoto Station where all public access routes into Kyoto converge.
This is also where you will find Kyoto Tower and shopping centres. From Kampong House, you are 5 minutes walking distance from the nearest train/subway station Tofukuji, bus stops
to all around the city, cafes, and convenience stores. And just 10 minutes from restaurants, supermarkets and even a hospital. Just a leisurely walk further will take you to some
beautiful places of interest like temples and museums.
The House is fully equipped with amenities like heating/airconditioning, a small kitchen, TV, your own portable Wifi, washing machine and even a bidet.
Stay with us now and have a lovely and memorable time that mirrors the spirit of Kyoto!

The JR Nara line and the Keihan Main Line share the train station at Tofukuji Station, which is excellent. We took a day trip to Nara on the JR and used the Keihan train to visit Kiyomizu-dera, Maruyama park, Fushimi Inari Taisha, and the Nishiki Market. The Imperial Palace is also a short walk from the Keihan line, though we did not visit on this trip.
If you want a quiet, little home away from the crowds, this place is wonderful.
The host made a good set of navigation pictures to assist getting us from Kyoto station to Kampong house which was very useful as we do not speak or read Japanese and train travel can be very confusing for newcomers. Kazuya met us at Kampong house and showed us a map of the area and where grocery stores and the popular temples and shrines were. He was friendly, spoke good english and answered our questions.
We used our tourist JR Rail passes to get almost everywhere. Tofuku-ji station is just 5 minutes away from Kampong house and just one stop away from big Kyoto station. All the the trains stop at Tofuku-ji station (which is not the case of other stations), so you really can get around cheaply. We did daytrips to Hiroshima (shinkansen) and Nara (light rail train) using Kampong house as our base and our JR Rail passes.
The area is very densely backed suburban townhouses, but very quiet neighborhood. We stayed for 4 days and saw more cats than people in the housing district. Near Tofuku-ji station, there is a corner store to grab quick rice-balls for breakfast and Dragon Burger restaurant for american styled burger and fries to get a quick break from Japanese fare.
We used the mobile wifi included in the rental everywhere we went, mainly to use Google Maps to help us navigate the train system and get to the most popular shrines. The 4G was great. We had many 20,000 step days and resorted to a $20 cab ride home a couple of times due to sore feet.
This is a 2 story townhouse that has modern features throughout the house. The place is nearly 1000 sq feet, which was a big draw for us 4, as we know how tiny living spaces can get in Japan. The rock garden was humerously small at first, but then we quickly appreciated the zen like nature of having bamboo and nicely appointed rock garden to look at instead of a rusty neighbors house.
Everything in the house worked well and was very clean and modern. The stairs to the second level are very steep (almost like a ladder), but that is common in Japan. Makes for going to the bathroom in middle of the night quite difficult as there is only 1 bathroom and it is on the main floor. The seemingly mandatory illuminated exit sign in the bedroom was too bright for us, so we put a t-shirt over it so we could sleep. The hotplate was difficult to use if you don't know Japanese, it definitely could use some english instructions. But all these minor issues did not detract from the very comfortable, quiet, and relaxing living space.
Thank you, Kampong house was a good base for tourists to explore Kyoto and neighboring areas. We would recommend this place to anyone.
